I Pods and I Phones for Science

Mrs. Becki Poston, our 6th grades science teacher, got permission for our class to bring our I phones and I pods to class so we could download a free application called Sky View. We are studying the unit on space and we are learning the different star constellations. This app shows planets, stars, the moon, the sun, satellites, and constellations in real time data. You can see the sun and the time the sun is coming up. You can see all the planets and constellations such as Orion, Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor. We saw the Hubble Telescope, the ISS (International Space Station),and the Atlas Centaur 2. This was definitely a way to make learning and science fun! Body Worlds Vital and USC Forensics Visit

TCA students view first hand chemistry laboratories, lectures with Dr. Morgan, and demonstrations in the forensics and mass spectrometer laboratory on Wednesday during a trip to USC and to the Body Worlds' Vital exhibit at The State Museum. Students in Biology I and II, and Chemistry II classes along with Dr. Jessica McCutcheon and Anna Floyd were tremendously pleased with the field trip. Thanks to Mrs. Tammy Cook, Mrs. April Floyd and Mrs. Vickie Parker for accompanying the students as extra chaperones.
Dr. Stephen L Morgan, Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, The University of South Carolina states “forensic analytical chemistry has interested me since the 1980's, and my research group started doing research projects in forensic analytical chemistry in the early 90's. We are involved in developing improved methods of analysis for forensic trace evidence such as textile fibers, drugs of abuse, hair, and polymers (such as adhesive tape and tire rubber). These methods include UV/visible, IR, and Raman microspectrophotometry, and microanalysis of trace fibers by extraction and separations (CE and LC) interfaced to mass spectrometry.”
We visited Dr. Morgan’s laboratory and the mass spectrometer lab as well.(Mass spec. equipment totaling over 3 million dollars) USC has 8 spectrometers, some of which are Leco Pegasus II gas chromatograph with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer, equipped with a laser pyrolysis system developed in-house and a Chemical Data Systems 2000 heated filament Pyroprobe with a CDS model 1500 valved interface.

The Body Worlds Vital exhibit at The State Museum was a fantastic experience for our students. The exhibit celebrates the potential of the human body and the body in motion. Featuring authentic human bodies, the exhibition shows the body in health, distress and disease. These detailed anatomical studies, compositions and representations allow you to gaze at what lies beneath the skin. Students had the opportunity to compare the body regular and the body with disease such as certain cancers, arteriosclerosis, Alzheimer’s, cirrhosis, and stokes. Earth Science Class - Guest Speaker

Reverend Mr. Bob Dockery visited the eighth grade Earth Science class on January 12. Originally from Oregon, he grew up very near the famous Crater Lake (formally Mt. Mezama). The class has been studying volcanoes and landforms. He presented the history of Crater Lake and the volcanic eruption which lead to it's formation. He brought an electronic photo show and he described all the features of the lake and surrounding region. Mr. Bob is currently the pastor of Mr. Zion Baptist Church in Pamplico, SC.
Mrs. Becki Poston is the instructor for the class. Today the class will be erupting volcanoes they constructed. "There She Blows!"

TCA students lead the way with servant leadership retreat. (Josh, Zach, Stephanie, Whitney, Mason, and Grayson)
The weekend was sponsored by the Lake City First Baptist Church. These six students participated in the annual fall leadership weekend with their first stop at Allendale Elementary School here the youth read to kindergarten students. Upon realizing that Allendale is one of the poorest areas in our nation, in August the youth raised money for ministry to children living there. The entire youth group committed to cosponsoring a literacy fair for 30 families this spring. The weekend also included Bible studies, a time of exploration, prayer and reflection on Capers Island, a wildlife preserve. This group of young leaders is lead by Mrs. Martha Patrick, wife of Pastor Shane Patrick of the Lake City Church. Mr. Kenneth Bowen and Mrs. Tina Askins also served as chaperones for the retreat.

English III Honors Go Gaming

Ms. Mary Ryan's English Honors III class has been busy designing game boards to go along with their current literature unit on Medieval culture. Three student groups had the task of constructing their own game board along with game pieces and a series of questions based on the unit of study. The groups also had to come up with a set of rules to play the game. The boards reflected the Medieval Age and consisted of different icons such as livestock, dragons, jousting, fiefs, and manors. Each game board was colorful, creative, and unique in its own way. These sophomores have enjoyed the hands-on learning activity about the Medieval culture.

McClam State Finalist for Wendy's Heisman

Grayson McClam has recently been named one of the 20 state finalist, 10 males and 10 females, in the Wendy's High School Heiseman Program competition. Congratulations! We are so proud of you and your accomplishments. The program recognizes well-rounded young men and woman who excel in learning, performing, and leading the class room, on the field, and in the community. Grayson is invited to attend a banquet to honor the South Carolina finalist and winners. Grayson is president of our student government, chaplain of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a football, basketball and baseball player, and a has just completed the leadership program Servant Leadership through the Lake City First Baptist Church.Grayson is a role model for our entire student body. He will be attending The Citadel in the fall.

Students Attend Research Day

Students in grades five, six, seven, and eight attended a research day hosted by the Bean Market Museum Director Mrs. Sherri Moore, along with Mr. Kent Daniels, and Mr. Mac Prosser. Mrs. Moore and Mr. Daniels created a three part program for the students to rotate through in which they received instruction and valuable research skills that will benefit them in preparation for any research project, but particularly the National History Day. The program consisted of a visit to the Historical Society looking for resources and learning to use microfilm, a PowerPoint presentation examining "good" research, primary and secondary source documents, validating your sources, and citation of the sources. Finally, they were in a round table discussion with the state director of National History Day in which she discussed this year's topic and the entry options, along with requirements and rules for the state and national competition. Mrs. Paula Reddeck and Mrs. Gail Smith accompanied them to the event. We thank the Bean Market, Mrs. Moore and Mr. Daniels for this educational program

Make A Difference Assembly

Do you think you can make a difference? That is the question some of our younger students attempted to answer today.
It was all about character, accomplishments, and challenges at Carolina Academy on Monday, October 31st when the Student Council sponsored a special "Making a Difference" assembly program. In keeping with the school's "Road to Character" theme, students were recognized for showing the qualities of honesty and integrity throughout the month of October, as well as for their successful efforts in fund raising at TCA. The school wide winners for the Veteran's of Foreign Wars writing contest were announced, second, third, and fourth graders presented their thoughts on making a difference through good citizenship, and first grader Olivia McConnell challenged the audience to remember that everyone can make a difference and that every effort - whether great or small - counts. The assembly ended with sophomore Rachel Cook presenting information about the Lysol Blue Ribbon Attendance Challenge, a program that encourages better health habits at school and at home; and Mr. Kenneth Bowen gave the Wounded Warrior Foundation Challenge to all homerooms. On Veterans' Day, each homeroom will be asked to contribute to this worthy cause with needed supplies from a list of items that can make a difference in the lives of our wounded warriors! TCA is “Making a Difference” all around you! Congratulations to our students and families!

Bobcats Defeat Charleston Collegiate On Senior Night

In an exciting comeback victory, the bobcats defeated Charleston Collegiate School by a score of 50-35. The seniors were able to leave the field victorious and celebrate their second win. The bobcats will be in action again on Friday night at Holly Hill Academy. Congratulations to the team and the coaching staff.

Tennis Girls In The Semifinals

Friday, Oct. 21st, was the final match for the bobcat tennis girls as they finished a successful season ranked third in the state. They met a talented Spartanburg Day School team at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter. The 1-5 score was not indicative of the close matches. Number one player, Rebecca Weaver, was the sole singles winner for the bobcats. Coach Jordan was complimentary of the Spartanburg ladies. She was pleased with the bobcats play all year long, especially with their dedication, determination, and attitude on the court. Congratulations for another fine season!

Fall Festival 2011

Monday, October 24th 6:00 - 8:00, will be our annual Fall Festival celebration. A costume contest will be held during the event.This is a fun night for kids of all ages!Each grade will have a booth with games and prizes and there will be jump castles, a giant slide, and lots of yummy carnival food. We sell tickets to use for the booths. A canteen for food, drinks, and delicious desserts will be available. A favorite booth, the senior class cake walk will be on the stage. The festival is sponsored by the Student Council and the proceeds are used for the annual scholarship fund given to a gratuating senior and presented at Senior Night. Come out and support the Student Council.

Congratulations to Miss Rebecca Truluck, our Homecoming Queen! She was sponsored by Grayson McClam. She is the daughter of Ren and Mac Truluck.

Our Mock Homecoming Queen was crowned at the Pep Rally on Friday afternoon. Grayson McClam, senior, was selected as the 2011 Mock Homecoming Queen.

The Bobcats defeated the Dillon Christian Warriors 14 - 13 on Friday night.

The students enjoyed a Homecoming Dance to culminate a great Homecoming celebration.

Throughout the summer we have been working to prepare for the 2011-2012 school year! I anxiously await the start of school on August 18th. As we prepare to open our doors for the 44rd year, we are moving forward on a number of fronts to ensure that the qualities that make our school special are secure for future generations.

Students Excel at Music Festival

30 plus students represented The Carolina Academy at the SCISA MUSIC FESTIVAL which was held March 10th at the USC School of Music. For Vocal Performance, Noel Dotson and Alexis Kelley both received Gold Medals. For piano performance, Elizabeth Askins, Mary Palmer Askins, and Rebecca Weaver all received Gold Medals for individual performances.

Our high school chorus(25 students) entered the competition for the first time and brought home the GOLD! Under the direction of senior Miss Alexis Kelley and accompanied by freshman, Miss Rebecca Weaver, the chorus produced a performance that far surpassed our expectations. Thank you to all the participants, parents, and accompanists who assisted in the performances.

Green Named to HOBY

Savannah Green has been selected to represent Carolina Academy at the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leathership seminar this summer. Savannah will be attending the prestigious progam with sophomore students from all over the state on the campus of Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina in June. HOBY is an internationally recognized organization founded in 1958, HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students. Inspiring, Educational, Compassionate, Energizing, Enthusiastic, Motivating, Transforming, Long-Lasting, and Life-Changing are some of the words that students, schools, parents, alumni, volunteers and supporters use to describe Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY).

Spring Sports Update

Sports Report: March 9, 2011
The lady Bobcats played Pee Dee in their first region match of the season. They defeated the lady Eagle’s by a score of 10-0. Samantha Sparrow hit her first career home run. Congratulation team! Catch the ladies in action again tonight with Trinity Collegiate. Game time for softball and baseball is 6:00 pm in Lake City.

The varsity baseball team was not as fortunate in their opening region game as they were defeated by the Pee Dee Eagles. They will be seeking to avenge their loss tonight against Trinity of Florence at the Buddy Wallace Fields.

Our JV softball and baseball teams played Pee Dee Eagles in Marion yesterday. They were not so successful but gained much experience. Keep your heads up Stay classy Carolina Academy. Good luck in your next outing. JV baseball plays at Hanna Pamplico at 5:00 pm.

Beauties Compete for a Title

Saturday night was a transformation night for the girls competing in the TCA Beauty Pageant. Beauties lined the stage as the curtains lifted and the lights dimmed. SCISA Music Festival

ETV Visits TCA Faculty

Everybody knows except Samantha - she is met on the court by Coach Wall. He presents her with a basketball which reveals the fact -- Samantha has reached a milestone - the 1000 point mark in her career. Few players have the ability or opportunity to reach this level of achievement. Congratulations to you and to your teammates as you celebrate this accomplishment. ART STUDENTS MAKE ORNAMENTS FOR THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Mrs. Sarah Helen Mishoe’s art students combined an old fashion Christmas ornament making gathering with some new gadgets to deck the halls at TCA. The younger students used old Christmas cards to fashion their designs of stars, presents, winter scenes, and crosses along with generous amounts of glitter and glue. The 5th and 6th graders used discarded aluminum can tabs to create their ornaments. Each one is uniquely crafted by each child to represent their talent and passion. ALONG WITH THE ORNAMENTS,Christmas tags are placed on the tree as a part of giving back to our community. Students and families are asked to sponsor a needy child or an adult from the Disabilities Foundation of Lake City. Ornament tags contain the age, size, and a special wish to help you with your selection. Along with your donation of a present, you are asked to remember the person with your promise to pray for them during the year. This worthwhile project is sponsored by the Beta Clubs of TCA. Thank you for providing opportunities for our students to experience the joy of giving.

Tennis Girls at Coach Ron's Church

New Zion Baptist Church of Lake City hosted a lock-in on Saturday for the TCA Varsity Girls' Tennis Team. Pastor and Coach Ron Avant arranged for the girls to stay at the church Saturday night while providing food, fellowship,and fun for the girls. In turn, they participated in the Sunday morning worship service. The girls sang several songs and joined in the worship time. Rev. Ron Avant has just recently completed his first year as coach. They girls finished with a perfect 10-0 region record and the conference championship. They placed 3rd in the state tournament.

A TCA following attended the church service and enjoyed the special music provided by the girls. Mrs. Myra Bazen was a featured soloist before the morning message. Mrs. Myra is the wife of Mr. Roger Bazen, athletic director at TCA.

Kristian Moen, a 2007 TCA honor graduate has been given the opportunity to join the Eddie James Ministry Team. Kristian will be serving full time beginning December 8th. She will be ministering in the Philippines, Israel, and in other areas overseas. This particular group reaches out to the lost and hurting with a focus on youth in crisis. The ministry includes a powerful music, drama and dance team followed by teaching and preaching as well. They have a heart to reach our high school and college age youth for Christ with a message of rehabilitation and restoration through relationship building, character development, education, training and an intentional focus on assisting them toward finding and fulfilling their purpose. Jesus says these words (John 10:10) "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

Fennell Selected as Presidental Scholar

Jerry Edward (JJ)Fennell has been named a Presidental Scholar at Tulane and Baylor University and has been invited to become a member of the Honors Program. JJ is attending a special weekend visit at Baylor this Firday, Saturday, and Sunday at which he will be interviewing for the top scholarship awarded at Baylor.
Other college acceptances for JJ include Liberty University, Regent University, Anderson, and Clemson.

JJ has also recently received an invitation to the Clemson Honors program along with a scholarship. JJ plans to pursue a career in aviation and ROTC at one of these fine schools. Good luck JJ, we are proud of you!

Middle School Math Team Competes

Tennis Falls to Holly Hill

TCA varsity tennis team competed in the semifinal round of the state playoffs on Friday. Several of the single matches went to tie breakers. However, the final result was a defeat for the young lady bobcats. They were aggressive and focused through the double matches. We are proud of their efforts and Region Championship. The team consists of ninth, eighth, and seventh graders only. Think about what the future holds -- get ready for next year -- we'll be ready for you! Tennis Girls Win Round Two

Our varsity girls tennis team advanced to the semi-final round of the SCISAA State Championship with a 5-1 victory over Trinity Collegiate of Florence. They completed the regular season in first place of the Region IV - AA classification. They will take the court again on Friday at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, SC. "We Are His Ministry", a drama team from Grace Christian Fellowship Church of Manning is returning to TCA for a performance on Thursday, October 17th. We Are His is actually a group of 10 young people ranging from the 6th grade to the 12th grade who perform interpretive drama, mime, and music ministry. They travel to various location in and around a tri-county area to witness to God's glory which shows the truth of our Lord's desires here on earth. Having a saving, personal relationship with each individual is truly the divine plan. It is even more dramatic when you consider that these are young students giving of their time and efforts to introduce others to their faith. The public is invited to attend this praise and worship celebration on October 17th, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. in the school gym. The Carolina Academy FCA is sponsoring this performance. This is a free event, no admission fee is required.

See You at the Poles -- Uplifting and Emotional

Amid the morning fog, birds singing, and the sun peeking through the clouds, fifty - two students, staff and parents gathered around the flagpole before school to pray together. The entire event was student lead by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. JJ Fennell, Student Body President, opened the event with a scripture reading from Matthew. The desire of the SYATP day was expressed then JJ gave an opening prayer. Students and adults were instructed to break-out into smaller groups with a group leaders in order to pray together for our school, the students, teachers, government, and our nation.
Students then returned to the larger circle and joined hands for sentence prayers. Many of the students expressed their prayers openly. FCA President, Scarlett Boyd, lead us in singing "Who am I" before closing the event with another Bible reading and prayer.

Nationally, many students feel the burden to share their faith and unite to pray for our nation on this special day, the third Wednesday in September.

Today the number has grown to 3 million students in the U.S. and there are also students in 20 other countries that participate in the event.

Thank you to the FCA sponsors, Mr. Kenneth Bowen and Coach John Wall, and to all the students who took a stand to let their lights shine at TCA.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) (also referred to locally as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM)) is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.

Make A Difference Day 2010 will be on Saturday, October 23, 2010 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.
Make a Difference Day was initiated in 1990. It is the fourth Saturday in October. Make a commitment this year to actively participate in this special day. If you have children let them get involved. It's important that they learn that even small efforts can make a big difference.
