Students Visit the State House

Mr. John Wall’s Seventh Grade History Class Visits the State Treasurer and the State HouseCurtis M. Loftis, Jr. South Carolina State Treasurer:
“It was a pleasure to meet with 7th graders from Carolina Academy in Lake City today. I tackled questions like "how much money does the office handle" to "how much does the state spend" to the always tough question from one boy "have you heard of Ric Flair?" — in Columbia, SC.
For the record, yes, I have heard of Ric Flair, The Nature Boy in addition to answering the other questions.
The students toured the monuments on the grounds of the State House and were tasked with documenting why the monuments were placed there and their importance to our state’s history. The students assembled in the balcony of the General Assembly and were introduced individually to the members of the State House of Representatives by Representative James H. Lucan, House Speaker Pro Tem. They were also greeted by our own Representative Lester Branham. Mrs. Amy Askins and Mrs. Gina Lamb accompanied the class and Coach Wall on their field trip.

Students Show Courageous Character

I Pods and I Phones for Science

Mrs. Becki Poston, our 6th grades science teacher, got permission for our class to bring our I phones and I pods to class so we could download a free application called Sky View. We are studying the unit on space and we are learning the different star constellations. This app shows planets, stars, the moon, the sun, satellites, and constellations in real time data. You can see the sun and the time the sun is coming up. You can see all the planets and constellations such as Orion, Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor. We saw the Hubble Telescope, the ISS (International Space Station),and the Atlas Centaur 2. This was definitely a way to make learning and science fun! Body Worlds Vital and USC Forensics Visit

TCA students view first hand chemistry laboratories, lectures with Dr. Morgan, and demonstrations in the forensics and mass spectrometer laboratory on Wednesday during a trip to USC and to the Body Worlds' Vital exhibit at The State Museum. Students in Biology I and II, and Chemistry II classes along with Dr. Jessica McCutcheon and Anna Floyd were tremendously pleased with the field trip. Thanks to Mrs. Tammy Cook, Mrs. April Floyd and Mrs. Vickie Parker for accompanying the students as extra chaperones.
Dr. Stephen L Morgan, Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, The University of South Carolina states “forensic analytical chemistry has interested me since the 1980's, and my research group started doing research projects in forensic analytical chemistry in the early 90's. We are involved in developing improved methods of analysis for forensic trace evidence such as textile fibers, drugs of abuse, hair, and polymers (such as adhesive tape and tire rubber). These methods include UV/visible, IR, and Raman microspectrophotometry, and microanalysis of trace fibers by extraction and separations (CE and LC) interfaced to mass spectrometry.”
We visited Dr. Morgan’s laboratory and the mass spectrometer lab as well.(Mass spec. equipment totaling over 3 million dollars) USC has 8 spectrometers, some of which are Leco Pegasus II gas chromatograph with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer, equipped with a laser pyrolysis system developed in-house and a Chemical Data Systems 2000 heated filament Pyroprobe with a CDS model 1500 valved interface.

The Body Worlds Vital exhibit at The State Museum was a fantastic experience for our students. The exhibit celebrates the potential of the human body and the body in motion. Featuring authentic human bodies, the exhibition shows the body in health, distress and disease. These detailed anatomical studies, compositions and representations allow you to gaze at what lies beneath the skin. Students had the opportunity to compare the body regular and the body with disease such as certain cancers, arteriosclerosis, Alzheimer’s, cirrhosis, and stokes. Earth Science Class - Guest Speaker

Reverend Mr. Bob Dockery visited the eighth grade Earth Science class on January 12. Originally from Oregon, he grew up very near the famous Crater Lake (formally Mt. Mezama). The class has been studying volcanoes and landforms. He presented the history of Crater Lake and the volcanic eruption which lead to it's formation. He brought an electronic photo show and he described all the features of the lake and surrounding region. Mr. Bob is currently the pastor of Mr. Zion Baptist Church in Pamplico, SC.
Mrs. Becki Poston is the instructor for the class. Today the class will be erupting volcanoes they constructed. "There She Blows!"

Board Election Run Off Ballots

Students Share the Joy of Giving

TCA students and faculty embrace the true meaning of Christmas generosity as they shared with some needy families and 10 adults with the Lake City Disabilities Department.

All-Region Tennis, Player of the Year, Coach of the Year

Congratulations to Rebecca Weaver who was recently named Region Player of the Year and to Coach Jordon Osborne as Coach of the Year. Haven Brown and Hannah Weaver were also named to the All-Region Team. Congratulations ladies! The Lady Bobcats finished third in the state competition this season. All three girls will be in action again in April at the SCISA Invitation Tournament in Sumter, SC.

Step Up and Lead

TCA students lead the way with servant leadership retreat. (Josh, Zach, Stephanie, Whitney, Mason, and Grayson)
The weekend was sponsored by the Lake City First Baptist Church. These six students participated in the annual fall leadership weekend with their first stop at Allendale Elementary School here the youth read to kindergarten students. Upon realizing that Allendale is one of the poorest areas in our nation, in August the youth raised money for ministry to children living there. The entire youth group committed to cosponsoring a literacy fair for 30 families this spring. The weekend also included Bible studies, a time of exploration, prayer and reflection on Capers Island, a wildlife preserve. This group of young leaders is lead by Mrs. Martha Patrick, wife of Pastor Shane Patrick of the Lake City Church. Mr. Kenneth Bowen and Mrs. Tina Askins also served as chaperones for the retreat.

English III Honors Go Gaming

Ms. Mary Ryan's English Honors III class has been busy designing game boards to go along with their current literature unit on Medieval culture. Three student groups had the task of constructing their own game board along with game pieces and a series of questions based on the unit of study. The groups also had to come up with a set of rules to play the game. The boards reflected the Medieval Age and consisted of different icons such as livestock, dragons, jousting, fiefs, and manors. Each game board was colorful, creative, and unique in its own way. These sophomores have enjoyed the hands-on learning activity about the Medieval culture.

McClam State Finalist for Wendy's Heisman

Grayson McClam has recently been named one of the 20 state finalist, 10 males and 10 females, in the Wendy's High School Heiseman Program competition. Congratulations! We are so proud of you and your accomplishments. The program recognizes well-rounded young men and woman who excel in learning, performing, and leading the class room, on the field, and in the community. Grayson is invited to attend a banquet to honor the South Carolina finalist and winners. Grayson is president of our student government, chaplain of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a football, basketball and baseball player, and a has just completed the leadership program Servant Leadership through the Lake City First Baptist Church.Grayson is a role model for our entire student body. He will be attending The Citadel in the fall.

Students Attend Research Day

Students in grades five, six, seven, and eight attended a research day hosted by the Bean Market Museum Director Mrs. Sherri Moore, along with Mr. Kent Daniels, and Mr. Mac Prosser. Mrs. Moore and Mr. Daniels created a three part program for the students to rotate through in which they received instruction and valuable research skills that will benefit them in preparation for any research project, but particularly the National History Day. The program consisted of a visit to the Historical Society looking for resources and learning to use microfilm, a PowerPoint presentation examining "good" research, primary and secondary source documents, validating your sources, and citation of the sources. Finally, they were in a round table discussion with the state director of National History Day in which she discussed this year's topic and the entry options, along with requirements and rules for the state and national competition. Mrs. Paula Reddeck and Mrs. Gail Smith accompanied them to the event. We thank the Bean Market, Mrs. Moore and Mr. Daniels for this educational program
